BrainFocus: Quit Scrolling · Effective October 19, 2026
Short version: BrainFocus counts the Instagram Reels you watch on your phone, and nothing you watch leaves your phone. To fix bugs and improve the app, it sends usage stats about how the app itself is used, and crash reports. You can turn these off in Settings. The optional Battles feature shares your nickname and your daily reel counts with the friends in your groups.
This policy explains what data the BrainFocus Android app (package com.staycoldsolution.brainfocus) uses, why, and your choices. The app is made by Staycold Solution ("we").
1. Data that stays on your phone
- Reel counts and settings. Your daily reel counts, history for recent days, daily limit, break settings, locks, and badge position are stored only on your device.
- Accessibility Service. BrainFocus uses Android's Accessibility Service API to recognize when you are watching a Reel inside Instagram, count it, show breaks, and block Reels at your limit. The service is limited to the Instagram app only. It reads screen labels and view IDs to tell a Reel apart from the rest of Instagram. This information is processed in real time on your phone. It is not saved and is not sent to us or anyone else.
- Display over other apps. Used to draw the count badge, breathing breaks, and the Reels block on top of Instagram.
- Notifications. Used only to alert you if reel counting has stopped.
2. Usage stats and crash reports
We use Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to understand how BrainFocus is used and to fix problems. They collect:
- App activity: which setup steps you complete, which permission steps you start, accept or decline, whether counting is turned on, the daily limit and break settings you pick, and app events such as reaching your limit, a break being shown, starting a lock, or joining a battle. We also send your total reel count for each finished day.
- Crash and error reports: technical details of what went wrong in the app, such as the error and the line of code involved.
- Device and app information: phone model, Android version, app version, language, approximate country (Google derives it from your IP address and does not keep the IP address), and a random ID that Firebase creates for this app install.
They never include what you watch, Instagram content or accounts, screen contents, or your messages. We do not collect the advertising ID, we do not show ads, and we do not sell or share data for advertising.
You can turn this off anytime in Settings → Privacy → Share usage stats and crash reports.
3. Data used by Battles (optional)
Battles let you compete with friends: the fewest reels each day wins. Battles are off until you sign in. If you use them, we use Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore) to store:
- Your Google account sign-in. Firebase Authentication receives your Google account's email address and a user ID so you can sign in. Your email is not shown to other players.
- Your nickname, which you choose (up to 20 characters).
- Your daily reel counts for about the last week, so your group can see the scores.
- Groups you create or join: group name, invite code, and the list of members.
Your nickname and daily counts are visible only to members of the groups you join. Nothing about what you watch, who you talk to, or your Instagram account is collected.
4. How data is protected
Usage stats, crash reports and Battles data are sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and stored by Google Firebase. Database rules let each player write only their own Battles data, and let only group members read a group's scores.
5. Sharing
We do not sell your data. Usage stats, crash reports and Battles data are processed by Google as our service provider (Firebase privacy information). We may disclose data if required by law.
6. Retention and deletion
- Data on your phone is removed when you clear the app's data or uninstall BrainFocus.
- Usage stats are kept for up to 14 months and crash reports for up to 90 days, then deleted automatically. They are linked only to the random install ID, not to your name or email.
- Battles data stays while your account exists. You can delete it anytime in the app: Battles → Delete account and data. This removes your nickname and scores from every group, deletes groups where you were the last member, and deletes your account.
- You can also ask us to delete it without the app. See Delete your account.
7. Children
BrainFocus is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
8. Changes
